Abstract

Neurofilament light chain is a neuronal cytoskeletal protein whose concentration in body fluids reflects the extent of axonal injury. As a sensitive yet non-specific biomarker, it is useful in multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and stroke. Highly sensitive blood assays enable monitoring of disease activity, prediction of prognosis and assessment of treatment efficacy. This article reviews current evidence and clinical implications.
