Abstrakt

Stres oksydacyjny odgrywa kluczową rolę w patogenezie wielu chorób związanych ze starzeniem się organizmu, w tym miażdżycy, chorób neurodegeneracyjnych, cukrzycy oraz chorób siatkówki. Siatkówka jest tkanką szczególnie narażoną na niekorzystne działanie stresu oksydacyjnego, gdyż charakteryzuje się wysoką przemianą materii i dużym zużyciem tlenu w porównaniu z innymi tkankami ciała. W artykule przeglądowym omówiono związek między mechanizmami komórkowymi zaburzonej homeostazy prooksydacyjno-antyoksydacyjnej a rozwojem zwyrodnienia plamki związanego z wiekiem oraz retinopatii cukrzycowej. Opisane są również naturalne mechanizmy obronne zachowania homeostazy redoks oraz strategie terapeutyczne oparte na zastosowaniu antyoksydantów.
