Abstract

The problem of microbiota disorders and intestinal barrier stability, discussed in recent years, raises the question of the indications for supplementation with probiotics, prebiotics, and sodium butyrate preparations. Its role in regenerating and maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier, and consequently, a favorable profile of bacteria colonizing it, is crucial for the proper functioning of the large intestine. Disturbances in this system lead to abnormalities in intestinal function, particularly disorders of the cerebrospinal axis (DGBI – disorders of gut-brain interaction according to the Rome V Criteria, formerly known as irritable bowel syndrome). Taking antibiotics for various indications or other medications in chronic therapy, which adversely affect the intestinal microbiota, is also significant. The most common clinical situations presented here outline some of the indications for the practical use of probiotics, prebiotics, and sodium butyrate.
