Abstract

Treatment of acute post-viral sinusitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, chronic sinusitis and chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps is based on anti-inflammatory treatment with intranasal corticosteroids and rinsing of nasal cavities with 0.9% NaCl solutions. Intranasal steroid therapy for the treatment of sinusitis has efficacy confirmed by numerous studies, is safe, reduces symptoms associated with the disease and has an impact on improving quality of life. The effect on symptom reduction is greater for sinusitis with polyps than without polyps. Intranasal steroid therapy has been shown to reduce nasal polyps and promote the prevention of their recurrence after endoscopic sinus surgery.
The article presents the current state of knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment of sinusitis and has been prepared for use in the practice of family physicians and non-laryngologists, as well as to pharmacists.
